More Hostas

Hello, it's me again!  And guess what?  I am hooked on Hostas.  I was visiting several Hosta gardens this summer and now I am totally inspired.  I am going to show you some pictures of the mature forms of the Hostas that I am going to plant this fall.  I cannot believe how easy Hostas are to plant and how fast most of them grow.  Van Wade and many other hybridizers have informed me that the most important ingredient to successful Hosta growing is preparation of the soil.  It is important to use powdered rock phosphate.  I get this near Stoneboro, PA.  Also, green sand which is an all organic, non-burning material from the ocean.  Another indispensable material to add is a controlled release fertilizer, such as Sierra Blen or Osmocote.  You may top dress Hostas, once a year in early spring and this is the only fertilizer that is needed. Cattle mature or horse manure should also be added.  The amount to use is half a shovel full per bushel of soil to the root zone area.  And there you go.  This is suppose to be a good formula.  I will let you know as we just used it on the latest bed of new Hostas.

Yes, you should mulch your Hostas.  This keeps down weeds and holds in summer moisture.  You may choose the mulch that you like best.  We use shredded hardwood bark mulch.

Here are some pictures of my favorite Hostas

Lemon Meringue This Hosta is called  'Lemon Meringue'  (P. Ruh ) It is a beautiful Hosta and usually costs around 50 dollars.  I love the contrast between the yellow and green.'
Tatoo Here is a beauty!   It is called 'Tatoo' (T. Avent)    This  Hosta has such beautiful contracting leaves.  This one is still hard to come by.  It often sells for around a hundred dollars.

Veronica Lake This Hosta is called 'Veronica Lake' ( F. Riehl.)  It sells for around 25 dollars.  I really like the leaves on this one too.
Striptease This Hosta is called 'Striptease' (Rick and Criss Thompson-1991)  It is a strange varigated sport of H. 'Gold Standard"  It grows as a foliage mound to 36" wide by 20" tall in about five years.  This one sells for about forty dollars.
Potomac Pride This Hosta is called 'Potomac Pride' (T. Avent) It is a beautiful blue-green color.  It sells for around twenty dollars.  The leaves are so shiny.
Sunny Brook This Hosta is called 'Sunnybrook'  ( D. Stone/Ruh/Banuai ).    It is a medium-sized Hosta with nice green and yellow leaves.  It sells for around twenty-five dollars.
Tokudama Flavo Circinalis This Hosta is called Tokudama Flavo Circinalis (1987 by the N. C. of the A. H. S.)  Elegant blue-green center of leaf is nicely puckered.  It grows 40" wide by 18" tall.  Slugs rarily bother this plant.  It sells for around fourteen dollars.
Spilt Milk This Hosta is called 'Spilt Milk' (Seaver-NR).  It has green leaves with variable with white to greenish-white streaks.   It is very unusual variegated Hosta because it is irregularly splashed and it is of very heavy substance.
Guardian Angel This Hosta is called 'Guardian Angel' (C.and R. Thompson)  It is a medium to large size Hosta.  This one sells for around forty dollars.  It is a must to have!
Little Sunspot This Hosta is called 'Little Sunspot' (Briggs Nur.) It is a mini-sized Hosta.  It was registered in 1996.  It sells for about eighteen dollars.  It is just beautiful against the blue ones.
