Woodland Walk

In my woodland garden I have planted a large variety of shade plants.  My shrubs are contained in a raised bed. Foundation stone hold the dirt in place.  I have hollies, azeleas, Rhododendrons, and parthenocissus tricuspidata (Boston Ivy).

Along the raised bed, I have a curved path.  It is made up of small flagstones and Belgium Blocks.  Along this path I have planted Helleborus, Hostas of three different sizes and many contrasting colors and leaf style.  I made sure that I planted ones that have scented flowers to add another sense to the garden. To add color to my garden I have planted Dicentra, Astilbe, Pumonaria,  and Plumbago.  In the spring,  many bulbs emerge.  My favorite spring plants along this walk are scilla nondescriptive, tulips, daffodils, and small crocuses.  I have also planted Virginia Bluebells.

Woodland Walk In this picture,  I have planted Francis Williams Hosta and Sum and Substance.  In the background,  you will see Patriot, So Sweet, and Halycon.
Woodland Walk Most of the Hostas in the picture are two years old.  I use Osmocote to fertilize them.  The nine month kind works best.
Woodland Walk When the sunlight shines through the Hostas it gives them a real glow especially in the early evening.  I really enjoy watching H. Francis Williams.  Often, this Hosta gets leaf burn.  However, the past two years mine has not been bothered by leaf burn.  I have had very little problem with slugs because I try to buy slug resistant Hostas.  I also try not to water late in the evening..
Hostas on sidewalk I really spent a great deal of time figuring out which Hostas would compliment each other.  I will be moving some around in the spring because a gardener is never completely  happy with the way the garden looks and enjoys change.  I hope to purchase many more Hostas in the future.  Since I have joined the Hosta Society, I hope to go on many tours of gardens and come up with new ideas for my garden.
woodland walk summer.jpg (127741 bytes) Here is the path in late summer.  Notice how much larger the Hostas are.  I really enjoy the scented Hostas that bloom in August.  Most scented Hostas do bloom in August.  I have Guacamole, So Sweet, Fragrant Bouquet and the August Lily.
hostas_by_hill.jpg (102857 bytes) We are planning on building a waterfall down over our hill into the spring.  This area gets half day shade.  We have planted many Hostas here.  We are in the process of gathering rocks and collecting topsoil.  We will mix green sand and manure.  This is a two year project and we will post more pictures as the project continues.
