Wade and Gatton

This summer we have enjoyed visiting many Hosta gardens in our area.  One of the nicest places to see Hostas in the United States is Wade and Gatton in Bellville, Ohio.  This is near the center of the state.  It is very near Mansfield.  We have been there twice this year.  Mr. Van Wade showed us around the gardens both times that we visited.  He has many different collections that he has named for different Hybridizers.  It is very enjoyable to see the collections and see the total picture of that Hybridizer's work.  I really enjoyed the Mildred Seaver Collection, The Bob Kuk Garden, and the Banyai collection.  We also enjoyed the Bill Zumbar Garden since we met him several weeks ago.  I really like Sultana which was hybridized by him!

Mr. Wade is so nice and knowledgeable.  He answers questions and knows so much about all kinds of plants.  He told us not to plant Hostas underneath Maples because their roots systems take water and nutrients from the Hostas.

Here are some picture from the Wade and Gatton Nurseries.  I included some mature Hostas and pictures of Hosta Collections.

Tokudama Aureonebulosa This Hosta is called 'Tokudama Aureonebulosa' (AHS 1987)  The color on this plant intensifies as the plant ages.  Leaves are heavily puckered, slightly cupped, and it has leaves of heavy substance.  It is considered a medium-sized Hosta.  This Hosta really responds well to a slow release fertilizer
Blue Wedgewood Here is a 'Blue Wedgewood ' (TF2x9)  (Smith by BHHS-1988)  This one is metallic blue and is considered one of the very best medium-sized Hostas.  It grows in a very nice compact form.  It is a very dark blue-green thick, heavy leaved Hosta.
Sagae This Hosta is called 'Sagae.  It was called Hosta fluctuans 'Variegata' in the past.  It was in existance in Japan before 1987.  It has large leaves that are of specimen quality.  It prefers shade to one fourth sun.  It has thick textured leaves of blue and chalky green with a definite gold leaf border.  Nothing can surpass this one.
King Tut This Hosta is called 'King Tut'.  (Harshbarger-1981.  The leaves emerge chartreuse but soon turn yellow (lutescent).  The mound is 26 inches wide by eleven inches tall.
Kulpa Collection Here is the Kulpa collection in the Van Wade garden.  It is a beautiful collection of Hostas.  I really enjoy the variety of collection Mr. Wade has of the different hybridizers.
Dick Ward This Hosta is called 'Dick Ward'.  It is a medium sized Hosta and it was registered in 1991 by H. Hatfield.  The colors on this one are very striking.
Paul Aden Garden The Paul Aden Garden has many wonderful plants that were hybridized by Mr.  Aden.  I really enjoyed looking at this collection.  I also enjoy reading The Hosta Book that he wrote.
Great Expectations Here is a mature clump of Great Expectations. Bond/Aden-1998)  It is variegated, extremely wide, with an irregular margin of blue and green enveloping a light yellow-cream center.   It is the best natural sport of H. sieboldiana 'Elegans'.  This was the hosta that got me hooked on Hostas and it is still my favorite.  I have eight in my garden.
Color Glory Here is the 'Color Glory'  It is a natural sport of H. sieboldians 'Elegans'.  This Hosta has a nice dark blue-green edge with a yellowish center, distinctly different from Great Ezpectations.  It does have similar leaf coloring however.
Gold Standard Garden Here is the Gold Stardard Garden.(Fortunei) (Pauline Banyai-9176)  This Hosta is not expensive and in the 1988 Popularity poll was ranked number one!  It is beautiful in a mass planting.  Because it is inexpensive it is possible to plant many just as Mr. Wade did.  I enjoy the mature plant in my garden.
Wade's House I really enjoyed seeing all the plants around the Wade home.  There are over three acres of Hostas and every bed is beautiful.  I could have stayed all day.
Sultana Here is Sultana (Bill Zumbar-1988)  It is my favorite Bill Zumbar plant.  It is beautiful as a small accent.  This one only grows to be eight inches tall but I have it by my bench so that I can look at it often.
Wade's Garden Here is a mass planting from one of Mr. Wade's garden.  It is so beautiful and I took many different pictures the gardens.  It is so relaxing to walk through the gardens.  However,  they have many bus tours so it is important to call ahead if you want to talk to Mr. Wade.
Herbie Here is a very small Hosta called 'Herbie'.(H. and D. Benedict)  It is considered a mini.  I really like this one because my husband's name is Herbie.  However,  it was named for Herbert Benedict the great Hybridizer. I would someday like to visit the Dorothy and Herb Benedict garden which is located at Hidden Lake Gardens, in Michigan.
