Trees & Shrubs

I enjoy planting many shrubs and trees.  My favorite book is the Reader's Digest Book, A Garden For All Seasons.. I like to have some pretty trees to watch during every season.  In the spring,  I enjoy watching Forsythia, Aesculus Pravia or Broccia.  I enjoy the fringe tree.

During the summer months,  I like to see the Dawn Redwood and the Bald Cypress because they appear so soft and the bark is interesting. My favorite tree for every season is The Paper Bark Maple.  MPGG Girard's (Acer Griseum Girarad's has the most beautiful crimson leaves in the fall.  The summer color is beautiful too.  The bark just peels and peels.  This is a rare and unusual-growing maple.  It is exceptionally lovely, rare and definitely a tree for all seasons.

Red Buckeye Red_Buckeye_Closeup.jpg (158892 bytes) Horstman Silberlocke Korean Fir Sidewalk

I have planted many pines to provide greenery for the winter and shelter for the birds.  We have planted many white pines, many Frazier Fir trees, Conn-colored firs, and Norweigen  Pines.   A very rare tree that I like a lot is the Horstman Silberlocke Korean Fir. (Abies Koreana Silver Curls) This tree is a specimen and is extremely rare.  It is a small growing tree with recurved needles exposing it beautiful silvery underside.  Girard's Nureries in Geneva Ohio is the only place that I have seen these.

One of my favorite places  to visit nurseries is in the Ashtabula, OH area.  There are over 40 nurseries and greenhouses. Bluestone Perennials is in this area, too.  There are two great restaurants.  One the Old Tavern is in Madison.  Another is Ferrente's Winery and Restaurante.  Both help to make a great day of any trip.  I would never miss Martin's Nursery because they specialize in Hostas.

House Shrubs Here a side view of our 1860 farm house.  We have planted dogwoods, ivy, arborvitae, and mountain ash.  We also have shrubs around the house such as hollies, rhododendron, azaleas, and sweet bay magnolias.
Ornamental_Aristocrat_Pear_Trees.jpg (587333 bytes) Here is a picture of our driveway in the month of May.  Our Aristocrat Pear Trees are all blooming.  We planted them about eight years ago.  They  have only bloomed really well the past two years.  Kraynak Nurseries in Sharon, PA really recommended this variety because they said the branches are stronger than most other ornamental pear trees. We have had good luck with them.  However, we have to trim many branches in the spring so that delivery trucks can go down the driveway.
Tri-colored Beech (Fagus Sylvatica Tricolor) Fagus Sylvatica Tricolor

The tri-colored beech is a very beautiful tree.  It is very nice in the summer garden.  It doesn't grow very fast and looks especially good against a solid green background.  The tri-colored beech has leaves that are marked in purple, pink and cream.  It is a broad upright grower.  It of course is a grafted tree..
