Hosta Gardening is Easy and Fun

Hostas are great plants for shade gardening.  They are called the "friendship" plant because they can easily be  divided and shared with a friend.  Many Hostas can take almost all day sun or at least morning sun.

My favorite books on Hosta Gardening are The Gardener's Guide to Growing Hostas by Diana Grenfell and The Hosta Book by Paul Aden.

On pages 152-153 of Diana Greenwell's book it gives a selection of "best Hostas",  Some of the categories are most pest-resistant,  most sun-tolerant, largest leaves, most attractive flowers, etc.

Some favorite places to get Hostas in our area are as follows:

bulletKuk's Forest Garden in Brecksville, OH
bulletBill Zumbar Nursery in Alliance, OH
bulletWade and Gatton in Bellville, OH
bulletMartin's Nursery in Ashtabula, OH

Here is a picture of Van Wade of Wade and Gatton Nurseries.  He lives in Bellville, Ohio.  He is holding a Van Wade Hosta which was named for him.  It is a real treat to visit his gardens and walk through them all.  I could spend hours and hours and not see everything.  Mr. Wade is very willing to help individuals learn more about Hostas and he has many wonderful varieties for sale. Here is a new variety of Hosta.  It is called Niagara Falls.  It won for best leaf at the American Hosta Convention for the past two years consecutively.  It will grow into a mature plant with lots of waves in the leaves.  I was thrilled to be able to purchase one this nice at Bill Zumbar's in Alliance, OH.  Niagra Falls
Here is the 'Tokudama Aureonebulosa'.  I purchased this one at Wade and Gatton.  It is a very colorful varigated Hosta.  It is a very slow grower, but as it ages the greens become more blue green.  The leaves are heavily puckered and slightly cupped.  It is one of my favorites as a mature Hosta.  It will grow to 36" wide, by 15" tall so it is rather compact in nature.  Wow, what a beauty! Tokudama Aureonebulosa
Here is a colossal gorgeous Hosta with glossy textured leaves that grow in an upright manner.  The chartreuse changes to gold when it is postioned in more light.  It is one of the largest Hostas anywhere.  It has won many awards and will even grow in 3/4 sun.  Be careful not to plant this one in windy locations.  It grows to 60" wide by 30" high.  It is a remarkable beauty. Hosta sieboldiana 'Great Expectations' is a variegated, extremely wide, irregular margin of blue and green enveloped by a light yellow-cream center.  It prefers shade to 1/4 sun.  It should be planted in close view because it is so beautiful and it needs to be given a lot of space.  It is considered by many the best natural sport of the H. sieboldiana "Elegans' yet seen.
