We are addicted to Hostas! . Therefore, we
are trying to learn as much as we can about them from as many people as
possible. So, we are joining many clubs. We joined the
Pittsburgh Hosta and Daffodil Society. We both decided that it might also
be fun to join the Western New York Hosta Society too. After joining the
club, we decided to attend the Annual Picnic, Tour, and Dig. This
event was held at Ran Lydell's Eagle Bay Hosta Garden in Dunkirk, New
York. There was also an auction which was a lot of fun.
It was very difficult to decide which Hostas to purchase, because Ran has so
many new ones. After seeing his garden, I decided to add a page to
show the spectacular Hostas that can be purchased from him. In the
spring, we will buy some mailorder. I want to buy 'Steady On', 'Oh
My Heart'. 'Eagles Nest'. and 'Saybrook Surprise'. All of these were
hybridized by Ran himself.
Some of the Hostas that we purchased were, 'Kinba', Montana 'Cho
Ko Nishiki', 'Lunar Orbit', and 'Crepe Suzette'.

Here is a picture of 'Oh My Heart'. This Hosta is
especially beautiful close-up because of the flowers. It has over a
hundred blooms per scape and to top it off, they are displayed just
above the heart shaped leaves. |
 |
'Eagles Nest' is a great hosta. It is a Sum and
Substance "sport". It will be available in the year
2000. I don't know if I can wait that long. |
 |
'Saybrook Surprise' is another Hosta that was hybridized by
Ran Lydell. It will be available in the year 2001. It is
still rather expensive now. But I can't say that it wasn't
tempting. |
 |
This is Hosta 'June Bug'. It is a smaller Hosta than
the previous ones. It has a gold center with a dark green
edge. The color enhances as the summer progresses. It has
purple flowers and is 24" high. |
 |
Here is Ran Lydell. He is the owner of Eagle Bay
Hostas and Cook's Nursery. The gardens are so beautiful and well
maintained. Anyone that enjoys Hosta Gardening would be inspired by
a trip to Dunkirk. |
 |
I want to show you a view of one of the Lydell
gardens. This one is my favorite. There are so many gardens to
walk through. There are hostas that I have never seen before. |
 |
The Hosta to the left is Hosta 'Steady On'. This is my
husband's favorite Hosta. The leaves on this one are so shiny.
It will not be available for some time yet. |
 |
The Hosta on the left is called 'New Moon'. It is not
yet available either. I hope some of these lovely Hostas are
available soon. Although it is very pretty in the picture, it
is a knock out in real life! |
 |
The last Hosta for now is the 'North Point". It
is also hybridized by Ran Lydell. It is very blue and
beautiful. I don't think it is available yet either. |
 |
There are many places to sit in the garden. Mr. Lydell
has landscaped many gardens in the Dunkirk area. I would enjoy
seeing some of his wonderful creations. Both Mr. Lydell and his wife
work very hard to make their business a real sucess. I can't wait to
return next spring. |
